Legalization of marijuana

In recent times, the legalization of marijuana has been a big issue. Marijuana should be legalized. Legalization would help keep many illegal pot dealers out of prison, which would help lower the expenses that the state pays to imprison an individual. The cost to imprison someone annually is $168,000. This expense is fully paid by taxpayers. If legalized, the marijuana industry can sore tax revenue for the national government. In January alone, the marijuana industry of Colorado stacked up $2 million in taxes. If all 50 states legalize marijuana, the government can produce $100 million every month. As marijuana is illegal in the U.S, many foreign cultivators are profiting from smuggling pot into the U.S and because of this the flow of money within America is reduced. Another reason marijuana should be legalized is that it has many positive attributes, such as its medical value. Marijuana helps with nausea. headaches and many other medical problems. Marijuana can be very helpful to people who have medical issues. If marijuana is legalized, law enforcement will be able to spend more of their time focusing on more important crimes and this will save the government a lot more money. When comparing marijuana to alcohol, marijuana is a lot safer. This is scientifically proven. Looking at marijuana from an agricultural view, hemp is a cannabis-originated bio fuel, which is a lot safer than the carbon-emitting fuels we use today. Looking at all these positive benefits of marijuana, I believe that it should be legalized and that it will help the American government as a whole.

  1. I agree 100 percent that marijuana should be legalized in the U.S. Marijuana not only will increase tax revenue ,but it will also create jobs for the people. The only negative thing about marijuana are people's perception that there is something negative about marijuana and legalizing it. However, I believe more people are changing their opinions on their view of marijuana being negative and are focusing more on the benefits of legalization. In this struggling economy any industry that can create jobs can't and shouldn't be overlooked. Marijuana is already legalized in Colorado for medical and recreational use and they are already benefiting a lot from legalization from an economical stand point. I believe we'll continue to see other states follow Colorado and legalize marijuana for the good of their state and the people.

  2. I agree with Jay’s blog on the legalization of marijuana. This blog does a great job of giving a basic introduction on why the United States should legalize marijuana. The main argument with this issue is money with a secondary argument of health benefits. Evidence of the cost of how much it cost to keep an inmate in prison yearly and Colorado’s tax revenue are statistically correct. Adding citations would make this argument stronger as well as using political interviews as evidence for how Texas stands on this issue.
Legalizing marijuana would be definitely be a money maker but how would it be regulated for sellers. Would sellers have a limit that they can grow/sell? There are too many unanswered questions that would make the rest of the states follow. Colorado seems to be a trial and error period while everyone watches to see what happens. Legalizing marijuana sounds like a great idea on paper but there are too many unanswered questions for all of the states to jump on board. However, Jay makes a good argument on why marijuana is legalized.
